the reasons why

who am i?

my name is matt aulich and i started blood moon wines in 2014 with a couple of mates. in 2019 i went solo. before wine (and during wine) i played guitar in bands called the paradise motel and late. you can find them on spotify/bandcamp etc. i play to the vines and the barrels occasionally.

this is kind of oversimplifying it, but i come at winemaking from two angles:

uno i really get a kick out flavours and aromas. wine offers a vast spectrum, both in its final bottled form and along the way, from fresh grapes to ferments and wine maturing in barrels. oh, then there’s texture… all this is about primal sensory experience, infinitely nuanced.

due the mortal coil is beyond wonderful, but at times, let’s face it, it can test you. there are low points. it can be boring. so… sometimes people enjoy a wine that harmonises with the good times… and, sometimes we need to jazz it up, or ease the furrowed brow. i try to help with either end of the spectrum. in moderation. or not.

i source fruit from responsible growers mostly in northern, western and southern victoria. i’m equally happy working with the french varieties or a suite of italians. however, the latter are often better adapted to our hotter, dryer farming conditions. i lean towards them more and more…

i try to make wines that are expressive of time and place, which is where a less-is-more approach in the winery comes in. this is oft-described as minimal intervention. doesn’t sound very romantic.

i believe that everyone should be able to buy good wine. assuming you think mine is good, i try to keep it affordable for you.

i respectfully acknowledge the traditional owners of the land i work on and pay my respects to their elders past, present and future in maintaining the culture, country and their spiritual connection to the land. the fruit for my wines is grown on wurundjeri, barengi gadjin, wadawurrung, taungurung and millewa-mallee lands.
