2018 SUNBURY CHENIN BLANC
Vineyard - Located in the cooler, elevated area near Riddells Creek at the northern end of the Sunbury appellation, the 30 year old Chenin Blanc vines are planted on shallow granitic soils that straddle the edge of the gorge that drains into the Longview Creek.
Matthew took over management of the Franc, Riesling and Chenin blocks of this vineyard for Blood Moon in 2015. A rigorous pruning regime was undertaken to retrain vines, which resulted in a low yield for that first harvest. Mulching to suppress weeds, retain moisture and promote soil health has seen a return to sustainable yields without sacrificing quality.
Winemaking - Hand picked on a sunny day in late March, the Chenin was wholebunch pressed to tank and allowed to settle on gross lees overnight. Indigenous yeasts fermented the juice, then the wine was aged partly in tank, partly in old French oak hogsheads. Oxidatively handled, unfined and unfiltered, this is a cloudy wine. No additions were made apart from a minimal amount of sulphur prior to bottling.
